Builders collect projects. Some stall, some drift away from what you want to work on, and some are a better fit for someone else. A swap lets you trade a live app for another live app, with or without cash on top. On Vibe Classifieds, swapping is one of three listing types, next to For sale and Free, and it costs nothing to list. We are in beta and the board is new, so treat a swap as a conversation starter, not a promise of matches.
What is an app swap?
An app swap is an exchange of ownership. You give up one working app and its domain, and the other owner gives up theirs. Each side ends up running something different from what they started with. Because both apps need to be on their own custom domain to be listed here, every swap involves two domain transfers as well as two codebases.
Why trade an app instead of selling it?
- You would rather build on a different idea than hold cash.
- The other app solves a problem you have, or sits in a niche you know.
- You are a better fit for their project, and they for yours.
- Neither of you has the budget to buy, but both have something the other wants.
A swap is not always the right move. If you just want to exit, a sale is simpler. Our where to sell my app page compares the routes.
How do I match value in a swap?
Two apps are rarely worth the same, and no formula settles it. Put the same questions to both:
- What does it earn each month, and how steady is that?
- How many people use it, and how fast is that changing?
- How old is the project, and how much traffic does it get?
- How often does it break, and how many hours a week does it take to run?
- What is included: domain, code, database, accounts, customers, design files?
Revenue and user numbers on a listing are self-reported, so ask both sides to show proof. Our valuation guide covers the factors in more depth. We do not quote multiples, and we do not set prices for you.
Can I add cash to even out a trade?
Yes, and it is common to do so. If your app is worth less than theirs, you add cash. If it is worth more, they do. Write down the amount, the currency, the method and when it moves. Handle that cash like any sale: through an escrow service, released only when both transfers are confirmed.
| Situation | A fair way to approach it |
|---|---|
| Apps look about equal | Swap straight, with written terms and a double escrow |
| One app clearly earns more | The owner of the smaller app adds cash to the trade |
| One app has users but no revenue, the other the reverse | Compare effort and risk, then agree a number or add cash |
| One app is more work to run | Reflect the extra hours in the terms, not just in the price |
| You cannot agree | Walk away without hard feelings, and list somewhere else |
How do I sequence the handover?
Order matters more in a swap than in a sale, because each side is waiting on the other. If one person moves first and the other stalls, the first person is exposed. A sequence that protects both:
- Agree terms in writing. List both apps, what each includes, any cash and a timeline.
- Prepare in parallel. Each side exports data, documents the stack and lists accounts to hand over, without moving anything yet.
- Use escrow for the domains. A neutral service holds both domains, and any cash, until both sides confirm.
- Transfer code and accounts. Repositories and hosting move at the same time or in agreed steps.
- Each side verifies. The app loads on the domain, the data is complete and the accounts work.
- Release. Escrow completes, and each owner finishes with a handover call.
The steps for moving a domain and a codebase are in our transfer guide.
Why use escrow for the domains?
A domain is the one asset a buyer cannot easily get back once it has moved. Escrow removes the question of who goes first. The site never handles money or domains itself, so we recommend an independent escrow service for the transfer. You and the other owner agree which one, and who pays any fee it charges.
What should I check before I agree to a swap?
- Use their app, and ask them to use yours.
- Look for the green Verified ownership badge. It means the owner proved they control the domain, nothing more.
- Ask for proof of any revenue or user claims.
- Read what each side is giving up, in particular any customers, billing relationships or user data.
- Check the running costs of the app you would take on, and whether you can maintain it.
How do I list a swap on Vibe Classifieds?
Paste your app URL. We read the public page, suggest a name, pitch, category and stack, and take a screenshot. You fill in what you would like in return and what is included, choose Swap, create a free account and post. The listing stays private until you prove control of the domain, then it goes public with the badge. Interested owners message you privately. The how it works page covers every step.
Not sure what you want in return? Say so. A listing that describes the kind of project you would take, such as a directory, a developer tool or a game, will attract better offers than one that only says make me an offer.
Questions about swapping apps
How does an app swap work?
Two owners agree to exchange one live app for another. You list yours as Swap, someone proposes a trade by private message, and you settle what each side gives, whether cash is added and the order of the handover. Both domains and codebases move, ideally through escrow.
Can I add cash to even out a swap?
Yes. If one app is worth more than the other, the owner of the smaller one can add cash to close the gap. Agree the amount in writing, and treat the cash the same way as a sale: hold it in escrow and release it when both transfers are confirmed.
What if the two apps are worth different amounts?
That is normal. Compare revenue, users, age, traffic, running effort and what is included, then agree a number that feels fair to both of you. There is no formula. If you cannot agree, the trade does not happen, and either side can walk away.
Do I need escrow for a swap?
We recommend it for any transfer of a domain, and a swap involves two. Escrow means a neutral service holds assets or funds until both sides confirm. We do not handle money or domains ourselves, so the protection has to come from the process you choose.
Does Vibe Classifieds take a fee on swaps?
No. Listing a swap is free, browsing is free, and we take no cut. We do not take part in the trade. You and the other owner agree terms directly, and any fees from an escrow service or a registrar are between you and that provider.
Can I swap a free listing or only a for-sale one?
Each listing has one type: For sale, Swap or Free. A Swap listing signals that the owner wants a trade. A For sale listing is priced for cash, though you can message the owner and ask whether a trade is possible. Free listings are given away.
